Crown Lengthening/Gum Surgery

When decay occurs below the gumline it may be necessary to remove a small amount of bone and gum tissue in order to gain access to it. Your dentist may recommend this procedure before he makes a new crown for your tooth.

Crown Lengthening procedures are done for both restorative dentistry and/or to improve the esthetics of your gum line. This procedure adjusts the gum and bone level to expose more of the tooth so that the decay can be removed and the tooth restored.

Sometimes crown lengthening is done to improve a "gummy" smile because the teeth appear short. The teeth may actually be the proper length but excess gum tissue may be covering these teeth. During this procedure excess gum and bone tissue is reshaped to expose more of the natural tooth.

Sometimes gum surgery is necessary in cases of severe gum recession. In cases of gum or gingival recession the tooth can be extremely sensitive to cold foods and liquids. In such cases we can restore the gum to it's original level by doing a gingival graft procedure. The graft material can come from either the patient's palatal gum tissue or from synthetic sources. The graft is placed under the existing tissue and the exposed root surfaces are covered and in most cases the tooth sensitivity is eliminated.
